Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a process of cleaning water. It separates the TDS (Total Dissolved Solids)
and mineral physically present in water. This process is based on membrane desalination process which is popularly used in purifying the brackish/high TDS water for drinking and commercial purposes. What is Reverse Osmosis System?
Reverse Osmosis is a technical and in-built process of cleaning water used by industry for many purposes. It can be used for industrial process applications or to convert brackish water, to recover salts from industrial processes or to clean the waste water. Though Reverse Osmosis will not remove all contaminants from water as dissolved gases i.e., dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, but it can be very useful for removing other harmful products such as bacteria, germs, dust, Trihalomethanes (THM,s)
, some pesticides, solvents and other Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC,s)
. In the Reverse Osmosis process, cellophane like membranes separates the purified water from contaminated water. An applied pressure is used on the concentrated side of the membrane forcing purified water into the dilute side, the rejected impurities from the concentrated side being washed away in the reject water.
During the Normal Osmosis Process, the solvent directs from one low solute concentration area to high solute concentration area with the help of membrane. Low solute concentration indicates High Water Potential whereas high solute concentration indicates Low Water Potential. While this process, pure solvent is driven through the other side and solute or solids are equalized each side of a membrane through osmotic pressure. An external pressure is applied to inverse the natural flow of pure solvents and thus it is called Reverse Osmosis. This process is quite similar to other cleaning/membrane technology applications. However, the main differences are found between reverse osmosis and filtration. The strong removal procedure in membrane filtration is quite squeezing, or size exclusion. So the process can perfectly obtain the separation of solids/ particles regardless of operational parameters such as influent pressure and concentration. In fact, reverse osmosis involves a dispersive operation so that separation efficiency can be remarked through solute concentration, pressure and water flux rate.
Reverse Osmosis system works with the help of membranes which is also called selectively permeable membrane. Common membrane materials include synthetic fibers such as polyamide thin film composite (TFC), cellulose acetate (CA) and cellulose triacetate (CTA) through which thin membranes are made. This membrane material can be spiral wound around a tube to provide an aweful surface for water treatment. RO membranes are known for their ability to reject compounds from contaminated water.
