Demineralization is used to remove the salts and minerals available in the water to make it drinkable and soft. Mineral water consists of adequate of quantity of salts, calcium, magnesium, sodium etc. which is hard to drink so it is preferable by many to make it free from the minerals or salts. Demineralization is still performed with help of ION Exchange, RO, and electro dialysis. RO and elctrodialysis are performed to remove the dissolved solids with the help of membrane process where as Ion exchange is softening process which is mostly used to remove the hard minerals such as calcium, magnesium from the water or waste water. In his process, Hydrogen (H+) and Hydroxide (OH-) are used to replace the negative and positive ions.
It contains a single tank wherein anion and cation resins are blended. Mixture of both the resins in single vessel help to produce high quality water compare to two bed deionizers but the regeneration process is also very complicated comparatively. Ion exchanges are most popular to make the water soften by removing minerals from the water as the mineral water may contain the indigestible rock salts or silica which can be harmful for health. But yet it is true, by this process, some healthy nutrients or minerals such as calcium and sodium are also cleaned
